Belize visa requirements: do you actually need one?
Most foreign visitors don't need a visa for Belize. US, Canadian, UK,
EU, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese, and most CARICOM nationals get a visa-free 30-day
tourist entry on arrival. Extensions are $25/month at any Immigration office, up to ~6
months. Overstay penalty is $25/day plus possible deportation. A small list of
nationalities requires an advance visa through a Belize diplomatic mission. Honest 2026
visa guide.
Most foreign visitors arrive on visa-free tourist entry. Visa-free includes US, Canadian,
UK, EU, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese, South Korean, Singaporean, most CARICOM
nationalities, and many others.
What you need at the border:
Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity
Proof of onward travel - return ticket, onward flight, or evidence of departure plans
Proof of sufficient funds - bank statement, credit cards, cash; rarely checked strictly but required by law
Accommodation address in Belize (hotel reservation, host's address, or property address if you own)
Immigration officers stamp 30 days on arrival. If you intend to stay longer, ask politely
at the border - sometimes 60- or 90-day initial stamps are granted for buyers, retirees,
and visible long-term plans. Don't count on it.
Initial tourist stay (30 days)
The default initial tourist stay is 30 days from the entry date. Your
passport stamp will show the entry date and the 30-day expiry. The 30 days run continuously
- including weekends and Belize public holidays.
Plan ahead: if your trip is 30+ days, you'll need at least one extension at an Immigration
office before your stamp expires. Don't wait until the last day; offices have queues and
some district offices have limited hours.
In-country extensions
Extending a tourist stay is straightforward:
Visit any Belize Immigration Department office - Belize City (Mahogany Street) is busiest; every district capital has an office
Bring passport, the cash fee in BZD or USD, and proof of accommodation
Pay $25 USD per month (some offices charge a small processing supplement)
Receive a stamp extending your stay by 30 days from the current expiry
Extensions are routinely granted up to 6 months total without leaving. Beyond 6 months,
extensions become discretionary - Immigration officers may require evidence of intent
to leave or formal residency application. If you plan to stay longer than 6 months, look
at QRP, digital nomad visa,
work permit, or permanent
residency as the structured route.
$25 USD per day overstay penalty payable at departure
Short overstays (a few days): typically settled by paying penalty
Longer overstays (weeks to months): immediate deportation, multi-year re-entry ban, possible forfeiture of pending property transactions during ban
Overstay records are permanent in the Immigration system - they will affect any future residency or citizenship application
Treat the $25/month extension as the legal path; treat the $25/day overstay penalty as
punishment for failing to do the extension. The math also doesn't favor overstaying -
a one-week overstay costs $175; a one-month overstay costs $750+ vs $25 for a legal
extension.
Visa-required nationalities
A small list of nationalities must obtain a Belize tourist visa in advance through a
Belize diplomatic mission. The list shifts; recent changes include China moving to
visa-on-arrival in 2024. Other commonly visa-required nationalities include certain
African, Asian, and Middle Eastern countries, plus Russian, Indian, and some Eastern
European nationals.
The advance-visa process:
Apply through the nearest Belize diplomatic mission (consulate or embassy)
Pay visa fee (varies by nationality and visa type)
Wait 5-15 business days for processing
Receive visa sticker in passport; present at port of entry
The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains the current visa-required country list.
Always check before booking travel - list and procedures change.
Working on tourist entry
Tourist entry does not authorize Belize employment or Belize-source
business activity. The legal lines:
Allowed on tourist entry: sightseeing, beach time, remote work for non-Belize employers (Belize doesn't actively police short remote-work visits), property viewing and purchase, attending meetings, conferences, training
Not allowed on tourist entry: Belize-paid employment, operating a Belize-registered business that generates Belize-source income, providing services to Belize clients for payment
For sustained remote work, use the Work Where You
Vacation digital nomad visa. For Belize-paid employment, use a work
permit. Note that foreign ownership of Belize property has no residency
prerequisite - you can buy property on tourist entry, no work permit, no QRP,
no permanent residency required. See our buying
property in Belize guide.

Frequently asked
Belize visa requirements quick answers.
Do I need a visa to visit Belize?
Most foreign visitors do not. US, Canadian, UK, EU, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese, and most CARICOM nationals receive a visa-free 30-day tourist entry on arrival at any Belize port of entry (Philip Goldson International Airport, land borders with Mexico and Guatemala, or sea entry points). You need a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity, proof of onward travel, and proof of sufficient funds. A small number of nationalities - primarily certain African, Asian, and Middle Eastern countries - must obtain a visa in advance through a Belize diplomatic mission.
How long can I stay in Belize as a tourist?
Initial tourist entry is 30 days. You can extend in-country at any Immigration Department office for $25 USD per month, generally up to 6 months total without leaving. After 6 months, some visitors do a short border run (Mexico or Guatemala for a few days) and re-enter for another 30-day cycle, though Immigration officers have discretion to deny re-entry if they believe you are using tourist entry as de facto residency. For stays beyond a year, you should use QRP, digital nomad visa, work permit, or permanent residency rather than perpetual tourist extensions.
Can I extend my Belize tourist stay?
Yes. Visit any Belize Immigration Department office before your current entry expires and pay the $25 USD/month extension fee. The office in Belize City (Mahogany Street) is the most commonly used, but every district capital has an immigration office. Bring your passport, the cash fee in BZD or USD, and proof of accommodation. Extensions are routinely granted up to 6 months total without leaving. After 6 months, extensions become discretionary and Immigration officers may require evidence of intent to leave or formal residency application.
What happens if I overstay in Belize?
Overstay penalties are $25 USD per day plus possible deportation and ban from re-entry. Short overstays (a few days) are usually settled by paying the per-day penalty at departure. Longer overstays (weeks to months) can trigger more serious consequences including immediate deportation, a multi-year re-entry ban, and forfeiture of property buying rights during the ban. Don't rely on overstay penalties as a back-door extension method - visit an Immigration office and pay the $25/month extension legally before your entry expires.
Which countries need a visa to enter Belize?
Visa-required nationalities are primarily certain African, Asian, and Middle Eastern countries. Chinese nationals now receive visa-on-arrival or pre-arranged visas after a 2024 program change. Russian, Indian, and certain Eastern European nationals require advance visas. Visa-required applicants apply through the nearest Belize diplomatic mission (consulate or embassy) with passport, photos, application form, supporting documents (financials, accommodation, return ticket), and fee. Processing typically takes 5-15 business days. The Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains the current visa-required list - always check before booking travel.
Can I work in Belize on a tourist visa?
No. Tourist entry explicitly prohibits any Belize-paid employment or Belize-source business activity. You can remote-work for non-Belize employers and non-Belize clients during a tourist stay (Belize doesn't actively police this for short visits), but the legal route for sustained remote work is the Work Where You Vacation digital nomad visa. For Belize-paid work you need a work permit. Buying property is allowed on tourist entry - foreign ownership has no residency prerequisite - but you cannot operate a Belize business or accept Belize employment.
