The application process
Job offer in hand from a Belize-registered employer (or define the self-employed / investor route).
Local job advertisement - sponsor advertises the role in Belizean newspapers / online channels for 2-4 weeks to demonstrate Belizean-first hiring effort.
Gather documents - passport, police certificate from home country (apostilled), medical certificate from a Belize-registered doctor, qualifications and references.

Self-employed and investor permits
Foreigners without a Belize employer have two main alternatives within the work permit
system:
Self-employed permit - for foreigners running a Belize-registered business with real Belize operations. Common for consultants, tourism operators, dive instructors who run their own shop, small entrepreneurs. Requires business registration, tax compliance evidence, and clear business plan.
Investor permit - for foreigners actively managing a substantial Belize investment (typically $200K+ deployed into a Belize business). Requires capital documentation, business plan, evidence of active management. Government fees sit at the upper end of the $1K-$3K range.
If neither route fits, the more common alternative for foreigners with no Belize employer
is to pursue QRP residency (if 40+ and earning $2K+/month from
foreign sources) or permanent residency after
12 months continuous residence.
Bridging to permanent residency
Work-permit time counts toward the 12-month continuous residence requirement for
permanent residency. The standard sequence:
Year 1: Arrive on work permit; sponsor handles employer-side paperwork
Year 2: Renew work permit; begin assembling permanent residency documents
Year 2-3: File permanent residency application once 12 months continuous residence is complete
