Belize digital nomad visa: Work Where You Vacation, honestly.
Belize's Work Where You Vacation program lets remote workers and online
entrepreneurs live in Belize for 6-12 months while working for non-Belize employers or
businesses. Minimum income $75K USD single / $100K family. Tax-exempt during the stay.
Designed for temporary stays - after 12 months you transition to QRP, work permit, or
permanent residency, or you leave. Best as a one-year test run before committing to a
longer Belize chapter. Honest 2026 application guide.
Belize's digital nomad program, marketed as Work Where You Vacation,
launched in 2020 and is administered by the Belize Tourism Board. It is a short-term
residency visa designed for remote workers who continue to earn from outside Belize
throughout the stay. The program is not a path to permanent residency or citizenship -
it is a one-year test run with a hard ceiling.
The defining features:
6-12 months in Belize on a single approval; no renewal beyond 12 months
Foreign income only - no Belize-source work or clients
Tax-exempt in Belize for the duration
Family inclusion - spouse and dependent children can join
Eligibility - income and documents
The income requirement is the headline filter:
$75,000 USD per year minimum for a single applicant
$100,000 USD per year for a family (spouse and/or dependents)
Income source: outside Belize - remote employment with a non-Belize company, freelance work for non-Belize clients, or business income from a non-Belize-registered company
Other requirements:
Valid passport from home country
Proof of income - employment letter, contracts, recent tax returns, bank statements (typically last 6-12 months)
Valid health insurance covering the Belize stay
Background check / police certificate
Confirmed accommodation arrangement in Belize
Application fee
The application process
Gather documents - passport scans, employment / contract letters, last 6-12 months bank statements, tax returns, health insurance certificate, background check.
Submit online via the Belize Tourism Board's Work Where You Vacation portal. Pay application fee.
Review - typically 4-6 weeks. Tourism Board may request clarifications or additional documentation.
Approval letter issued. Arrive in Belize within the validity window (typically 90 days).
Immigration entry - present approval letter at port of entry; receive digital nomad stamp valid for 6 months.
Extension to 12 months - apply in-country before 6-month expiry. Standard renewal procedure with the Tourism Board.
Cost and timeline
Realistic budget:
Application fee (single): ~$500 USD
Application fee (family): ~$1,500 USD
Health insurance (Belize-valid): $500-$2,000 USD/year depending on coverage
Background check / document costs: $100-$300 USD per applicant
Total per family for 12 months: $2,000-$4,000 USD (excluding living costs)
Timeline from application to arrival: 6-10 weeks realistically. The
program is significantly faster than QRP or permanent residency - a real advantage if
you want to start your Belize chapter within a few months.
Tax treatment
During the Work Where You Vacation stay, you are exempt from Belize income tax
on your foreign-source remote work. Belize recognizes that your income is generated outside
Belize and not connected to the local economy.
Important caveat: this is the Belize side only. Your home country tax obligations
continue. US citizens owe US tax on worldwide income regardless of Belize tax
treatment. UK, Canadian, EU residents face their own country's rules on tax residency
while abroad. Always confirm cross-border tax treatment with a qualified home-country
advisor before relying on Belize's exemption.
Digital nomad vs. QRP - which is right?
Decision framework:
Choose digital nomad if: you want a 6-12 month test run, under 40 (don't qualify for QRP), already earning $75K+ from foreign sources, don't want long-term residency obligations, want fast application processing.
Choose permanent residency if: committed to long-term Belize life, want eventual citizenship, willing to do 12 months continuous initial residence, don't qualify for QRP.
What happens after 12 months
The digital nomad visa does not renew beyond 12 months. At month 12 you have four options:
Leave Belize and reapply later (typically after a cooling-off period)
Transition to QRP residency if you turn 40 or already meet QRP criteria
Begin a permanent residency application - your digital nomad months count toward continuous residence
Apply for a work permit if you accept Belize-paid employment
Many digital nomads use the year specifically as a "test before committing" period. See
our moving to Belize and cost
of living in Belize guides for the broader picture.

Frequently asked
Belize digital nomad visa quick answers.
Does Belize have a digital nomad visa?
Yes. Belize's digital nomad program is called Work Where You Vacation and launched in 2020. It allows remote workers and online entrepreneurs to live in Belize for 6-12 months while working for non-Belize employers or running non-Belize businesses. Applicants need to prove a minimum annual income from outside Belize, hold valid health insurance, and pass a background check. The program is administered by the Belize Tourism Board and is designed for temporary stays rather than long-term residency.
How much income do I need for Belize digital nomad visa?
The income threshold is $75,000 USD per year for a single applicant and $100,000 USD per year for a family. Income must come from outside Belize - remote employment with a non-Belize company, freelance income from non-Belize clients, or business income from a non-Belize-registered company. Applicants prove income with employment letters, recent tax returns, bank statements, and contracts. The program is not a fit for lower-income remote workers; for them the standard tourist-entry-and-extend route, QRP, or permanent residency may make more sense.
How long can I stay on the Belize digital nomad program?
Initial approval is for 6 months, extendable to a total of 12 months. After 12 months, the program does not renew - you must either leave Belize or transition to a different residency status (QRP, work permit, or begin a permanent residency application). Many digital nomads use the year as a test run before deciding whether to commit to a longer-term path. Some spend the year buying property, then transition into QRP or permanent residency on their second arrival.
Can my family join me on Belize digital nomad visa?
Yes. Spouse and dependent children under 18 can be included. Family applications require the higher income threshold ($100K USD vs $75K for a single applicant), proof of relationships (marriage and birth certificates), and individual document sets for each family member (passport, health insurance, background check where applicable). Total family application fees run approximately $1,500 USD. Children of digital nomads can attend international schools in Belize during the program; see our Belize student visa guide for the formal student-visa route if your stay extends beyond 12 months.
Do I pay tax in Belize as a digital nomad?
No Belize income tax on your foreign-source remote work during the program. The Work Where You Vacation visa explicitly grants tax-exempt status for the duration of the stay, recognising that your income is generated outside Belize and not connected to the Belize economy. You still pay tax in your home country per its rules (US citizens, for example, owe US tax on worldwide income regardless of Belize tax treatment). Always confirm cross-border tax treatment with a qualified tax advisor in your home country before relying on Belize's tax exemption.
Belize digital nomad visa vs QRP - which should I pick?
Digital nomad visa is right for: time-limited stays (6-12 months), under-40 remote workers, anyone who wants to test Belize before committing, and high-earners ($75K+) who don't want long-term residency obligations. QRP is right for: 40+ applicants with $2K+/month foreign income, anyone wanting open-ended residency with flexible time-in-country requirements (just 30 days/year), and retirees who want a permanent base. Digital nomad is temporary; QRP is open-ended. Many digital nomads use the year as a test run and transition to QRP afterwards. See our QRP guide for the full retiree-program picture.
