The pet-import process overview
Belize's pet import process is administered by the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA). The basic pathway:
- Apply for the BAHA import permit 2-4 weeks before travel.
- Confirm rabies vaccination is current (administered 30+ days before travel, not more than 12 months prior).
- Get vet health certificate within 14 days of travel.
- Book airline pet travel (cabin or cargo).
- Arrive in Belize with all documents - present to BAHA inspector at the airport.
- Clear customs, no quarantine, go home with pet.
The whole process is simpler than the UK, EU, or Australia - no rabies titer test, no waiting period after arrival, no extended quarantine. Most foreign movers report straightforward experiences when documentation is complete.
BAHA import permit
The BAHA import permit is the foundational document. Apply through the Belize Agricultural Health Authority directly:
- Application timing: 2-4 weeks before travel. Same-day permits aren't possible.
- Permit fee: $25-$50 USD depending on permit type and pet count.
- Application contents: pet species and breed, age, microchip number (if any), origin country, vaccination summary, owner contact, planned travel date and port of entry.
- Valid for one entry - separate permit needed if you fly out and return with the pet.
Permits are usually granted within a few business days for routine applications. Complex cases (exotic pets, working dogs, large kennel imports) take longer. BAHA contact details are publicly listed on the agency website.
Rabies and health certificate
Two veterinary documents are required:
- Rabies vaccination certificate. Must be issued by a licensed veterinarian, show the date of vaccination, the vaccine manufacturer and batch number. Vaccination must be administered at least 30 days before travel and not more than 12 months prior. Puppies and kittens under 4 months may have specific waiver pathways.
- Veterinary health certificate. Issued by a licensed vet within 14 days of travel. Confirms the pet is healthy, free of communicable disease, current on routine vaccinations (distemper, parvo for dogs; FVRCP for cats), and fit for travel. Some vets use a USDA-endorsed form (in the US) for international travel; others issue their standard health certificate. BAHA accepts standard veterinary certificates.
Bring originals and at least two photocopies of both documents. Border officers retain copies; you keep originals for your records and any onward travel.
Airline rules and pet travel
Airline rules add a layer on top of BAHA requirements. Major carriers serving Belize (American Airlines, United, Delta, Southwest, Tropic Air, Maya Island Air) have varying pet policies:
- Cabin pets (small dogs, cats under ~20 lbs). Most major US carriers allow one pet per passenger in an under-seat carrier. Fees $100-$200 each way. Reserve well in advance - most airlines limit cabin pets per flight.
- Cargo pets (larger dogs, multiple pets). Travel in temperature-controlled cargo. Fees $300-$1,000+ depending on size and route. Airlines impose summer-heat embargoes for certain breeds and routes; check ahead.
- Snub-nosed breeds. Most major carriers refuse to carry brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs, boxers, Persian cats) in cargo due to breathing risks. Cabin travel may still be possible for small specimens.
- Tropic Air and Maya Island Air (domestic). Limited pet capacity on small commuter planes. Confirm well in advance for inter-Belize flights.
Use a hard-sided airline-approved carrier; soft carriers are typically only allowed for cabin pets. Tag the carrier with your contact details, destination, and "Live Animal" labels.

Tropical climate considerations
Belize's climate is hot, humid, and tropical year-round. Considerations for incoming pets:
- Heat tolerance. Long-coated breeds (Huskies, Malamutes, long-haired Goldens) struggle in the tropical heat. Plan for air conditioning, shade, plenty of water, and reduced outdoor activity during midday.
- Heartworm. Mosquito-borne and significantly higher risk than most northern climates. Year-round monthly heartworm prevention is essential. Bring 6-12 months of preferred prevention from home in case local supply is limited.
- Ticks and fleas. Year-round pressure. Flea/tick prevention is non-negotiable.
- Leptospirosis. Vaccination recommended; the disease is more common in tropical environments.
- Snakes, scorpions, stingrays. Outdoor pets in rural districts face wildlife encounters that don't exist in suburban North America. Train recall and supervise outdoors.
- Salt air corrosion. Coastal living degrades pet equipment (leashes, carriers, harnesses) faster.
Veterinary access by district
- Belize City: Multiple full-service clinics with diagnostic imaging and surgical capability.
- San Pedro / Ambergris Caye: Saga Humane Society plus private vets serving the island.
- Belmopan / San Ignacio (Cayo): Solid mid-tier vet clinics serving western Belize.
- Placencia / Hopkins: Smaller vet practices; serious cases may require Belize City referral.
- Corozal: Local vets plus Chetumal (Mexico) as a regional alternative for complex care.
- Rural Toledo / remote villages: Limited access; plan for 60-90 minute travel to nearest clinic.
Vet costs in Belize are dramatically lower than US/Canada: routine consultation $20-$40, vaccination $15-$30, spay/neuter $50-$150, basic dental cleaning $80-$200. Stock prescription medications from home for the initial 6-12 months. For broader relocation context see our moving to Belize guide and cost of living guide.
