Importing a car to Belize: duties, process, and whether it's worth it.
Belize car import duties run 25-60% of vehicle value depending on age
and engine size. QRP residents get a one-time duty-free import for one vehicle -
potentially $5K-$15K in saved duty. For everyone else, the all-in import cost
(duty + shipping + broker + registration) usually exceeds buying an equivalent used
vehicle locally. Honest 2026 picture of duties, shipping, timelines, and when shipping
actually makes sense.
Belize customs duty on imported vehicles is calculated on the CIF value (Cost + Insurance + Freight to Belize port). The duty rate depends on vehicle category, engine size, and age:
Passenger cars under 4 cylinders (small engines): ~25-35% duty.
SUVs, trucks, vans: ~25-45% depending on use category and engine size.
Luxury vehicles, large displacement engines (3.0L+): Up to 60% duty plus higher environmental tax.
Hybrid and electric vehicles: Reduced rates in some categories (incentive policy).
On top of customs duty, expect: General Sales Tax (12.5% on CIF + duty), environmental tax ($200-$1,500 depending on vehicle), customs processing fee, and registration fees. The combined effective rate often lands at 50-100% of the vehicle's original purchase price by the time it's driveable in Belize.
QRP duty-free vehicle import - one-time benefit
The Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program includes a one-time duty-free vehicle import as part of the personal effects exemption. This is one of QRP's most material concrete benefits:
One vehicle per QRP holder, imported within the first 12 months of QRP status.
Full exemption from customs duty and environmental tax; minor admin fees still apply.
Vehicle must be for personal use, not commercial, and remains subject to Belize ownership rules.
Selling within a defined period can trigger retroactive duty assessment - plan to keep the vehicle.
For a $20K-$40K vehicle, the QRP exemption is worth $5,000-$15,000 in saved duties. QRP retirees should plan carefully: ship a newer, reliable, more valuable vehicle from home rather than something cheap. See our QRP residency guide for the full program details.
Ship from home vs buy locally - the realistic decision
For non-QRP movers, the decision usually favors buying locally:
Path
Cost
Timeline
Best for
Ship + duty-free (QRP)
$2K–$4K (shipping + admin)
6–12 weeks
QRP holders w/ newer vehicle
Ship + pay duty
50–100% of vehicle value
6–12 weeks
Rare - specific vehicles only
Buy locally - used JPN import

Most non-QRP movers
Buy locally - used US-spec
$6K–$20K

Movers wanting US familiarity
The Belize used-car market is dominated by Japanese imports - Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser, RAV4, Honda CR-V - which handle Belize roads well, hold value, and have parts/mechanics availability. Salvage-title and US-previously-imported vehicles also circulate at lower prices.
The import process step-by-step
Choose a shipping method. Container shipping (more protection, higher cost) or Roll-On/Roll-Off (RO/RO, cheaper). Major routes: Miami, New Orleans, or Houston to Big Creek (Stann Creek) or Belize City port.
Engage a customs broker in Belize. Critical step. Brokers handle clearance paperwork and Customs and Excise liaison. Fees run $300-$600.
Vehicle departs origin port. 1-3 weeks transit by sea.
Pay duties and fees. Or process QRP duty-free exemption documentation.
Customs clearance. 2-6 weeks depending on documentation and broker efficiency.
Department of Transport inspection. Vehicle safety inspection (1-2 weeks).
Registration and license plates. Belize plates issued; ready to drive.
Total timeline: 6-12 weeks from departure to driving. Plan for the long end of that range.
Documents required
Original vehicle title (or certificate of ownership)
Bill of sale or purchase invoice
Bill of lading from the shipping company
Passport, visa, or residency card
Vehicle registration from country of origin
Insurance documents
Commercial invoice and packing list
QRP approval letter and Tourism Board QRP certificate (for duty-free import)
All documents must be originals or certified copies. Missing documentation is the #1 cause of customs delays. Work with your customs broker to assemble the full file before shipment leaves origin port.
Driving on foreign plates - limits and risks
Tourists may drive a foreign-plated vehicle on the original border entry permit, typically 30 days, extendable up to 90 days total at a customs office. After that:
The vehicle must leave Belize by the permit expiry, OR
Be formally imported with duties paid (or QRP duty-free if eligible), OR
Be placed in bonded customs storage while you sort out import.
Driving past the expiry creates customs violations and risk of vehicle seizure. Long-term residents and QRP holders cannot drive on foreign plates indefinitely - proper Belize registration is required. Insurance for foreign-plated vehicles is also limited; most local insurers require Belize plates. For broader relocation context see our moving to Belize guide and cost of living guide.

Frequently asked
Importing a car to Belize quick answers.
How much does it cost to import a car to Belize?
Total landed cost typically runs 50-100% of the vehicle's declared value. Customs duty alone is 25-60% of CIF (cost + insurance + freight) value depending on engine size and vehicle age, plus environmental tax and other smaller fees. Shipping from the US runs $1,500-$3,000 by container or RO/RO from Miami, New Orleans, or Houston. Add customs broker fees ($300-$600), inland transport, registration, and inspection. For a $20,000 used SUV, expect total landed cost of $28,000-$35,000 before you can drive it. Many expats decide it's not worth it and buy locally instead.
Can QRP residents import a car duty-free to Belize?
Yes - the Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program includes a one-time duty-free import of one vehicle as a personal effect. This is one of QRP's most concrete material benefits. The vehicle must be imported within the first 12 months of QRP residency status and is exempt from customs duty and environmental tax, though minor admin fees still apply. The exemption is one-time and one-vehicle only. QRP retirees should plan carefully which vehicle to bring - typically a newer reliable SUV or truck - since the exemption can be worth $5,000-$15,000 in saved duties. Full QRP details on our QRP residency page.
Should I ship my car to Belize or buy locally?
For most non-QRP expats: buy locally. The all-in import cost (duty + shipping + broker + inspection + registration) usually exceeds buying an equivalent used vehicle on the Belize used-car market. Local used cars are dominated by Japanese imports (Toyota Hilux, Land Cruiser, RAV4, Honda CR-V) and US-spec vehicles previously imported by other expats. For QRP residents using the duty-free exemption: shipping a newer, higher-value vehicle from home makes financial sense. Also ship if you have a specific vehicle (collector, custom modified, sentimental value) you genuinely need. Otherwise local market is simpler.
How long does it take to import a car to Belize?
Total timeline runs 6-12 weeks from US departure to driving in Belize. Sea freight from US East Coast or Gulf ports takes 1-3 weeks. Once the vehicle arrives at Belize port (Big Creek or Belize City), customs clearance typically takes 2-6 weeks depending on documentation completeness and broker efficiency. After clearance, vehicle inspection by Department of Transport (1-2 weeks), then registration and license plates (1-2 weeks). Plan for delays - Belizean customs processes move on Belize time. Use a reputable customs broker; DIY clearance is technically possible but rarely worth the headache.
What documents do I need to import a vehicle to Belize?
Standard documentation: (1) Original vehicle title or certificate of ownership. (2) Bill of sale or purchase invoice. (3) Bill of lading from shipping company. (4) Passport and visa/residency documentation. (5) Vehicle registration from country of origin. (6) Insurance documents. (7) Commercial invoice and packing list. For QRP duty-free import, additional documents: QRP approval letter, Belize Tourism Board QRP certificate, declaration that the vehicle is personal property. All documents must be originals or certified copies. A licensed customs broker handles submission and follow-up with Belize Customs and Excise.
Can I drive a US car on US plates in Belize?
Only temporarily. Tourists driving a foreign-plated vehicle can stay up to 30 days on the original entry permit (extendable up to 90 days total). After that, the vehicle must either leave Belize, be formally imported with duties paid, or be placed in bonded storage. Driving a foreign-plated vehicle past the permit expiry creates customs violations and risk of seizure. Long-term residents and QRP holders cannot drive on foreign plates indefinitely - the vehicle must be properly imported and registered with Belize plates. Insurance for foreign-plated vehicles is also limited; most local insurers require Belize registration.
