The 3-month tourist driving window

Tourists and short-term visitors can drive in Belize on a valid foreign driver's license (US, Canadian, UK, EU, most Commonwealth countries) for up to 3 months / 90 days from entry. This is separate from your visa duration:

• Your tourist visa may be valid for 30 days at entry, extendable to longer periods at immigration offices.
• Your driving privilege on a foreign license runs 3 months regardless of visa extensions.
• After 3 months, you need a Belize driver's license, even if you're still on a tourist stamp.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) isn't required but can be helpful for car rentals and police interactions during the 3-month window. Most foreign visitors successfully drive on home licenses without an IDP.

License conversion process

For holders of recognized foreign licenses (US, Canadian, UK, EU, most Commonwealth), conversion is straightforward:

1. Gather documents (see below).
2. Visit a Department of Transport office. Most districts have one. Belize City and Belmopan are the most efficient.
3. Submit application with documents and photos.
4. Pass vision test on-site - standard eye chart.
5. Pay the fee in Belize dollars.
6. Receive the license - same day or within a few business days depending on office.

No written test, no road test, no driving school certificate required. The basic vision test is the only screening. Total time at the office: 30-90 minutes depending on queue.

Documents required

• Current valid foreign driver's license - bring the physical card.
• Passport with current Belize entry stamp or residency visa.
• Proof of address in Belize - recent utility bill, rental agreement, or notarized landlord letter.
• Two passport-sized photos (some offices provide on-site photos for a small fee).
• Completed application form - available at the Department of Transport office.
• Application fee in cash (Belize dollars preferred; some offices accept USD).

Originals and one photocopy of each document is the typical request. The proof-of-address requirement catches some new movers - keep a rental agreement or utility bill handy, or get a notarized landlord letter if you're staying short-term.

Fees and where to pay

Pay in Belize dollars at the office. Credit card facilities are limited at smaller district offices - bring cash. Receipts are issued for all payments; keep them with your license documents.

Annual renewal cycle - the catch

Belize driver's licenses are valid for one year from issue date - shorter than typical US or Canadian renewal cycles (4-8 years). Renewal is simple administratively but easy to forget:

• Renewal fee: $30-$50 USD equivalent.
• Renewal window: Some districts allow renewal up to 30 days before expiry; some require renewal on or after expiry date.
• Renewal process: Visit any Department of Transport office, present current license, pay fee, receive new card.
• Expired-license driving: Carries fines and traffic-stop complications. Driving on an expired license can void insurance coverage.

New drivers - written and road tests

Drivers without a prior license from a recognized country must complete the full new-driver process:

1. Driving instruction - basic course or instructor hours, depending on age and prior experience.
2. Written theory test covering Belize road rules, traffic signs, and basic vehicle operation. ($10-$25 fee.)
3. Practical road test conducted by a Department of Transport examiner. ($25-$50 fee.)
4. License issued upon passing both tests, with the same documents required as for conversion.

This path is uncommon for foreign movers - most arrive with existing licenses and use the streamlined conversion. New-driver process is more relevant for teen children of expat families turning 17-18 in Belize.

• Belize City - main Department of Transport office. Largest queue but most efficient processing.
• Belmopan - capital district office. Less crowded; good option for Cayo and Belmopan residents.
• San Ignacio (Cayo) - district office serving western Belize.
• Dangriga (Stann Creek) - district office serving Hopkins, Placencia, and surrounds.
• San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) - island office for ambergris caye residents.
• Corozal - district office serving the northern border region.
• Punta Gorda (Toledo) - district office for southern Belize.
