Social Security in Belize: how US retirees actually receive benefits.
US Social Security pays full benefits to retirees living in Belize.
You can keep US bank direct deposit and access funds via ATM, or use SSA's
International Direct Deposit to a Belize bank. The SSA Federal Benefits Unit
serving Belize sits at the US Embassy in San José, Costa Rica. US tax obligations
continue; Belize doesn't tax foreign pensions. Here's the honest 2026 guide.
Yes, SSA pays Social Security benefits to retirees in Belize
Belize is on the SSA routine-pay list - the set of countries where the Social Security Administration will pay retirement, survivor, and disability benefits without restrictions. Benefits pay at full amount, with annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) applied normally. Your benefit doesn't shrink because you moved.
What changes: you must inform SSA of your foreign residence, complete periodic Form SSA-7162 (Foreign Enforcement Questionnaire) when sent, and update your address if you move within Belize. None of this reduces your benefit; it just confirms continued eligibility.
Deposit options: US bank ATM withdrawal vs Belize bank direct deposit
Two practical approaches:
Option 1 - Keep US bank direct deposit, withdraw in Belize: Most retirees we work with prefer this. SSA deposits to your US bank as before. You withdraw cash via Belize ATMs or transfer to a Belize bank via online wire. Pros: keeps US bank access for emergencies, simpler setup, full FDIC protection on funds. Cons: ATM fees ($3–$8/withdrawal), exchange spread on the BZD pegged at 2:1 to USD.
Option 2 - SSA International Direct Deposit (IDD) to a Belize bank: Available with select Belize banks. Requires Form SSA-1199 or country-specific IDD form submitted through the SSA Federal Benefits Unit. Pros: funds arrive in BZD directly, no ATM fees. Cons: more paperwork, less flexibility if you change banks, depends on bank participation status.
For most retirees, Option 1 wins on flexibility - keep your US bank, use ATM withdrawals or periodic wire transfers as needed. Set up an online-only US bank (Schwab, Fidelity, Charles Schwab Investor Checking) that refunds ATM fees worldwide.
The SSA Federal Benefits Unit serving Belize
There is no SSA office inside Belize. The Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) at the US Embassy in San José, Costa Rica handles Social Security, Medicare, Veterans Affairs, and other federal benefits questions for Belize-resident US citizens. Contact is by email, phone, or appointment.
Most routine matters never need the FBU - they can be handled online at ssa.gov through your my Social Security account: address changes, direct deposit updates, replacement benefit verification letters, and Form 7162 responses can all be done remotely. The FBU is for non-standard situations, complex cases, or in-person appointments.
US tax on Social Security while abroad (the part most people get wrong)
Living in Belize does not exempt you from US federal income tax on Social Security benefits. Standard IRS rules apply - up to 85% of benefits taxable depending on your combined income (provisional income above $34,000 single / $44,000 joint triggers the 85% inclusion).
Belize, on the other side, does not tax foreign-source pension income including US Social Security. There's no US-Belize tax treaty, but there's also no double taxation problem because Belize simply doesn't tax the income. State tax obligations vary - if you can establish non-resident status in your former state before the move, you generally avoid state tax on Social Security going forward. Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and other no-income-tax states have no state tax to escape regardless.
You must continue filing US federal returns (Form 1040) as a US citizen no matter where you live. Speak with a US tax professional who handles expat returns; this page is not tax advice.
Is Social Security alone enough to retire in Belize?
Depends on benefit size, household composition, and district choice.
Couple at $2,500–$3,100/month combined: Modest Corozal or Cayo retirement ($1,500–$2,500/mo all-in for a couple) is comfortable with travel-home buffer. The QRP retirement visa income threshold of $2,000/month is satisfied.
Single at average $1,900/month: Modest Corozal retirement is workable with discipline (~$1,100–$1,600/mo for a single retiree). Cayo or coastal lifestyle is tight.
Couple at $4,000+/month combined: Comfortable Placencia or Hopkins lifestyle is sustainable. Premium Ambergris coastal lifestyle still needs supplemental savings.
Premium island lifestyle (Ambergris): Social Security alone is rarely enough. Plan supplemental investment income or savings draw.
Ongoing admin: 7162 questionnaires and address changes
Three admin items to stay current on:
Form SSA-7162 (Foreign Enforcement Questionnaire) - sent every 1–2 years to confirm continued eligibility. Failure to respond can suspend benefits. Respond promptly when received.
Address updates - inform SSA whenever you change your Belize address. Easy online through my Social Security at ssa.gov.
Bank changes - update direct deposit information online or via the FBU as needed.
Set a calendar reminder. Lost benefits from missed paperwork are entirely preventable.

Frequently asked
Social Security in Belize quick answers.
Can I receive US Social Security in Belize?
Yes. US citizens and lawful permanent residents can receive Social Security retirement benefits while living in Belize indefinitely. The SSA pays benefits to retirees in nearly every country in the world, and Belize is on the routine-pay list. Benefits continue at the same dollar amount; cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) still apply. You do need to inform SSA of your foreign residence and complete periodic Form SSA-7162 questionnaires to confirm continued eligibility.
How do I get Social Security deposits to a Belize bank?
Two practical options. (1) Keep US bank direct deposit and use ATM withdrawals or online transfers to a Belize account - most common approach, simplest setup, no SSA paperwork beyond residence notification. (2) Direct international deposit to a Belize bank via SSA's International Direct Deposit (IDD) program - available with select Belize banks, requires Form SSA-1199-OP74 (or country-specific form) submitted through the SSA Federal Benefits Unit. Most retirees we work with prefer option 1 for flexibility and to keep US bank access for emergencies.
Does Belize tax US Social Security?
No. Belize does not tax foreign-source pension income, including US Social Security, for foreign residents. However, you still owe US federal tax on Social Security benefits under standard IRS rules (up to 85% of benefits taxable depending on combined income). Living abroad doesn't remove your US tax filing obligation as a US citizen. There's no US-Belize tax treaty, but there's also no double taxation issue because Belize doesn't tax the income on its side. State tax obligations vary - establish non-resident status in your former state if possible.
Can I retire on just Social Security in Belize?
Possible for many couples; tight for most singles. The 2026 average Social Security retirement benefit is roughly $1,900/month individual, $3,100/month combined for a couple. A couple at $2,500-$3,100/month combined can comfortably fund a modest Corozal or Cayo retirement ($1,500-$2,500/mo all-in for a couple) with room for travel and buffer. A single retiree at the average $1,900/month is workable in Corozal with discipline but tight. Premium coastal lifestyle (Ambergris Caye, Placencia) requires supplemental income or savings on top of Social Security.
Where is the nearest US Social Security office for Belize?
The SSA Federal Benefits Unit serving Belize is at the US Embassy in San José, Costa Rica. They handle Social Security, Medicare, and other federal benefits questions for Belize residents by email, phone, or appointment. There is no SSA office inside Belize. Most routine matters (address changes, direct deposit setup, Form 7162 questionnaires) can be handled online via my Social Security account at ssa.gov or by mail without needing to contact the Costa Rica office at all.
Do I lose Social Security benefits by retiring in Belize?
No, you do not lose benefits by moving to Belize. Belize is on the SSA routine-pay list, meaning benefits pay at full amount with COLA increases. You must respond to periodic SSA-7162 questionnaires confirming you're still alive and entitled (failure to respond can suspend benefits). You also need to inform SSA of your foreign address. Medicare changes if you move abroad (it generally doesn't cover Belize healthcare - see our Medicare in Belize guide), but Social Security cash benefits themselves continue unchanged.
