1. Birth certificate (apostilled)
Each applicant on the QRP application — primary, spouse, and each dependent child — requires a certified copy of their birth certificate, then apostilled by the issuing country's authority.
- US: certified copy from the state where born (state Vital Records office). Apostille from that state's Secretary of State. Cost: $25–$75 for cert copy + $20–$100 for apostille. Time: 2–8 weeks total.
- Canada: certified long-form birth certificate from the provincial vital statistics office. Authentication by Global Affairs Canada. Cost: CAD $25–$50. Time: 4–6 weeks.
- UK: certified copy from the General Register Office (England/Wales) or NRS (Scotland) or GRONI (Northern Ireland). Apostille from the FCDO Legalisation Office. Cost: £11–£35. Time: 2–4 weeks.
Sequencing tip: birth certificates don't expire and can be sourced months in advance. Start with these on day one.
2. Marriage certificate (if applying with spouse)
Required if you're applying as a couple. Same apostille process as the birth certificate. If you've been divorced and remarried, BTB may also request the apostilled divorce decree.
Recent name change? Don't underestimate this trap. Marriage, divorce, or legal name change in the past 5 years requires the supporting document(s) apostilled. If your passport name doesn't match your birth certificate name, you need the chain of documents to bridge them.
3. Police clearance certificate
This is the document that catches the most applicants on timing. The certificate must be less than 6 months old at the time of submission to BTB. Gather it too early and you'll need to re-do it.
- US: FBI Identity History Summary. Two channels: (a) FBI Channelers (eg, AccurateBiometrics, Fieldprint) — 1–5 business days, $50–$80; (b) FBI direct via mail — 4–6 weeks, $18. Use a channeller. Apostille from US Dept of State (Washington DC) — adds 4–8 weeks.
- Canada: RCMP Certified Criminal Record Check (fingerprint-based). 2–4 weeks via accredited agency. Authentication by Global Affairs Canada.
- UK: ACRO Police Certificate. 10 working days standard ($55) or 2 working days premium ($95). Apostille from FCDO Legalisation Office.
Sequencing tip: gather police clearance 4–6 weeks before submission so the 6-month validity window covers BTB's 3–8 month processing.
4. Income verification ($2,000+/mo foreign source)
BTB requires documentation showing $2,000+/mo in regular foreign-source income. The documentation must come from the income source itself — not your bank account.
Acceptable sources:
- Pension or retirement annuity: recent statement from the pension administrator showing monthly disbursement amount
- Social Security: SSA award letter or benefit verification letter (US); CPP/OAS equivalent (Canada); UK State Pension forecast or award letter
- IRA/401(k) regular distributions: brokerage or plan administrator distribution statement showing the regular monthly amount
- Investment portfolio dividend/interest income: brokerage monthly statements showing distribution amounts (often need 6-12 months of statements)
- Royalties or guaranteed annuity income: letter from the payor
Does NOT qualify: self-declared income, business income from a closely-held entity you control, transfers from your own savings accounts, Belize-source income.
5. Bank reference letter
Standard letter from your primary bank confirming you are a customer in good standing, your account has been open for at least 2 years, and your typical balance range. Most banks have a template. Cost: $0–$50. Time: 2–4 weeks.
6. Medical certificate
Confirms you're free of contagious disease and capable of self-sufficiency. Can be done in Belize during a visitor trip (the simplest path) or via an approved provider abroad (slightly more complex paperwork). Cost: $100–$300. Time: 1–2 weeks for results.
Check your provider's recognition with your agent before scheduling. BTB maintains an informal accepted-providers list; using a provider outside that list can mean re-doing the exam.
7–8. Passport + photos
- Certified copy of the photo page of your current passport (passport must have 6+ months of remaining validity at submission and ideally 12+ months)
- Four passport-sized photos (2"x2" US standard; check current BTB specifications via your agent), all four identical, less than 6 months old
9–10. CV/personal statement + character references
- Short personal statement and CV — typically 1–2 pages summarising your background, work history, and reason for choosing Belize. Your agent will guide format.
- Two character reference letters — from individuals who have known you 5+ years, not family members. Standard letter format (relationship, duration, character attestation). Cost: $0. Time: 1–2 weeks for individuals to write and notarise.
Country-specific notes
US applicants
- Apostille bottleneck: California and Florida Secretary of State offices regularly run 6–10 weeks. Texas and New York are 2–3 weeks. Use expedited services ($50–$200 extra) in slow states.
- FBI clearance: use a Channeller for fast turnaround. Direct FBI takes 4–6 weeks.
- Income source: Social Security + IRA/401(k) is the most common documented income pattern; well-recognised by BTB.
- FBAR/FATCA awareness: moving to Belize triggers US foreign-account reporting obligations — see our QRP tax implications for US citizens guide.
Canadian applicants
- Authentication, not apostille: Canada hasn't joined the Hague Apostille Convention; documents are authenticated by Global Affairs Canada then legalised by the Belize High Commission or embassy.
- RCMP background check typically 2–4 weeks via accredited fingerprinting agency.
- Income source: CPP + OAS + RRSP regular distributions is the standard documented income pattern.
- Healthcare planning: provincial health coverage typically lapses after 6+ months absence — see our healthcare for expats guide.
UK applicants
- Apostille: FCDO Legalisation Office processes within 1–2 weeks via premium service or 4 weeks standard.
- Police certificate: ACRO is the standard; premium tier returns in 2 working days.
- Income source: UK State Pension + private pension drawdown is the standard documented income pattern.
- NHS: moving abroad ends NHS eligibility; international health insurance with Belize coverage is essential.
